Volunteers Make a Lasting Impact Across Greater New Bedford

This spring, volunteers of all ages came together to strengthen our community and support local families through two impactful United Way of Greater New Bedford initiatives: Spring Hunger Heroes and Youth Day of Caring.

At this year’s Spring Hunger Heroes, more than 180 volunteers stepped up to help package 1,000 meal packs for local children to take home over April school vacation week. These meal packs help ensure that children who rely on school meals continue to have access to nutritious food while school is out of session. Community members, families, businesses, and student groups worked side-by-side to make a direct impact on hunger in our region.

Just a few weeks later, Youth Day of Caring brought together 142 students from seven local high schools for a day dedicated to service and community improvement. Students volunteered at nonprofit organizations and community sites throughout the Greater New Bedford area, completing projects such as landscaping, cleaning, organizing donations, stocking pantry shelves, and preparing spaces for summer programming. Their hard work provided valuable support to local agencies while inspiring the next generation of community leaders.

These events show the incredible power of volunteerism. When people come together to give their time and talents, they create meaningful change for our neighbors and strengthen the entire community.

Volunteers continue to play a critical role in addressing local needs, from food insecurity to supporting nonprofit organizations that serve families every day. Whether it’s a one-time project or an ongoing commitment, every volunteer effort helps build a stronger SouthCoast community.
