Volunteer Spotlight – Dr. Shanna Howell, PhD., Chair of the Board
“I will always be a supporter of the United Way.”

Having previously volunteered with United Way while pursuing her doctorate in Iowa, Dr. Shanna Howell was determined to work with United Way of Greater New Bedford when she moved to Massachusetts in 2019. Drawn to the organization's mission, Howell recognized that creating a lasting impact goes beyond financial contributions—it requires the active involvement of people, especially volunteers, to carry out the essential work.

“Giving back to the community has always been important to me,” commented Howell. “United Way’s mission and effective approach to addressing a wide range of critical issues facing families and individuals resonates with my belief system. I will always be a supporter of United Way.”

Looking ahead, Howell is excited about the organization’s deeper focus on economic mobility, mainly through the new Financial Wellness at Work program. “In partnership with caring employers, we are bringing assistance directly to employees, making it convenient for them to access services without needing time off. I firmly believe the impact of providing financial stability to a family through skills and knowledge will extend across generations.”

Shanna is on the Development Committee and is now in her second term as the United Way Board Chair, underscoring her enduring commitment to the organization. Outside of her committee and governance duties, Shanna serves as the Vice Principal of Student Services at Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School. United Way of Greater New Bedford is fortunate to have a professional and community leader like Shanna Howell on the team. Her contributions make a significant difference in the lives of those served by United Way, allowing us to create a brighter and more inclusive future for all.
