July Blog: Fresh, Affordable & Fun: Summer Food Resources in Greater New Bedford

Summer is in full swing, and it’s the perfect time to enjoy fresh, healthy food without straining your wallet. Whether you're feeding your family, stocking up on veggies, or just trying to eat better on a budget, there are some incredible (and local!) resources available to help.

Here are a few ways you and your loved ones can enjoy affordable, nutritious food this summer, many of which are free or accept SNAP and HIP benefits:

New Bedford Farmers Market (Coastal Foodshed)

There’s nothing like fresh produce in the summer and the New Bedford Farmers Market makes it easy and affordable to shop local. Held every Thursday from 2–6 PM at Buttonwood Park, this market is full of fresh fruits, veggies, baked goods, and more. It accepts cash, credit, SNAP/HIP, WIC, and senior coupons.

Why we love it: When you use your SNAP card, the HIP program automatically adds back the amount you spend on local fruits and veggies—so it’s basically free healthy food!

Coastal Foodshed’s Virtual Market & Food Hub
Not able to get to the market? No problem! Coastal Foodshed also offers a Virtual Market, where you can shop online and pick up at Kilburn Mill in New Bedford. You can even use SNAP/HIP benefits at checkout.

Why we love it: It’s like Instacart but local and healthier. No extra cost, and you're supporting area farmers.

United Way of Greater New Bedford Mobile Market
The Mobile Market pops up across New Bedford and Wareham every Tuesday and Thursday evening (5:30–7 PM) from July through October. It’s completely free, and you get to pick out fresh produce just like at a farmers market with no income requirements or registration needed.

Why we love it: It’s built for working families. No standing in pantry lines, just grab what you need and go.

Play in the Park: Free Lunches & Kids' Activities
If you’ve got kids at home, New Bedford’s Play in the Park program is a lifesaver. Throughout the summer, various city parks offer free lunches for kids plus fun activities like sports, crafts, music, and more. It’s a great way to get kids outside, fed, and entertained, all at no cost.

Why we love it: It takes the pressure off summer meal planning and gives families a chance to have fun together.
