Since 1999, the Task Force for Foster Care support has worked to increase our community’s awareness and responsiveness to the needs of foster children and their foster families. The group has placed a focus on a few different areas since its inception:
The Task Force hosts an annual Foster Parent Appreciation Dinner. This year, our event showed gratitude to over 100 area foster parents in attendance. A special video was created to thank area foster parents. You can view the video below. Other events have included the foster children’s holiday party, foster family cookouts, and skating parties. The group has also raised thousands of dollars to support foster children and teens through its Take This Child to Heart fundraising efforts. To donate to the fund, click here.
The Foster Children and Teen Enrichment Fund provides mini-scholarships to foster children and youth for enrichment activities. This year alone, the fund has distributed more than $14,000 to more than 60 foster children and youth in the care of the New Bedford Department of Children & Families (DCF) area office.
The Task Force has focused on raising awareness of foster children and families through an article series with The Standard-Times, an education subcommittee which worked to include foster children in the New Bedford Public Schools Strategic Plan, and conducted a comprehensive Foster Care Community Profile and Foster Children’s Needs Assessment for our region.
